IEC60335-1 Safety Standard for Household Appliance

IEC 60335-1 is part 1 of the international general standards which are the requirements for electrical household appliances and similar applications. The standards are also set for devices with rated 250V single phase and 480V multi-phase.Along with more and more electrical household appaliances such as Robots,Smart Furnitures,Sweepers come into houses,the safety of this category devices are becoming more and more important.Meanwhile more devices which once were not in this category now are classified into this category.

Besides the general standards of part 1, there is a part 2 IEC60335-2 of the standard which sets additional requirements for some specific devices,so special attention should be paid when making products design.
Power supplies used for household appliances should comply with IEC60335 standard,so next we only focus on IEC60335 standard power supplies details.

The National difference in CB Group and North America

In North America, IEC 60335-1 has been nominated to different prefix like UL 60335-1 in USA,CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60335-1 in Canada, and NMX-J-521/1-ANCE in Mexico.But IEC60335-1 can be recognized as the basis even there are slight different between them.

Points to be Considered

The most commonly used External Power Supplies is 62368 standard ones,in previous article we have talked about it.The main differences between these 2 standard are Creepage distance and Leakage current.
For safety purpose, 60335-1 standard regulates power supplies Creepage distance longer than 62368 standard ones.This point must be considered well when designing PCBs.
For same reason,60335-1 standard regulates power supplies leakage current less than 62368 standard ones,so double Y-Capacitors design is adopted.
